Signs of Wild Crows

Crows are one of the most intelligent birds in our country and although they can become a pest, they often help humans by cleaning up road kill, eating insects and rodents. They can however become a nuisance by destroying farmer’s crops, tearing open rubbish bags and making a racket. As crows are very intelligent and adaptable whatever preventative measures you put in place to get rid of crows will stop working after a while, so methods are need to be altered every now and then.

Crows are medium-large in size and most species are black and grey or jet black where as other crows are pied and some are even very colourful. There are eight species of crows that breed in the UK and there are also many other species around the world.

The most intelligent crow in the UK is the all-black carrion. It is rather fearless but are clever enough to be wary of man. These crows are generally quite solitary but sometimes live in pairs. They are very closely related to the hooded crow. You will often find carrion crows come to gardens and farms for food, they are very wary of where humans live so initially they may be cautious but once they have learnt it is safe the will continue to return for food.
